Exclusive Interview: Youngr On New Single “Monsters”, Touring Europe & Incubus Collaboration Dream

Get into Youngr! He is a rising star in the UK music scene, signed to Island Records and Universal, who in the past 365 days has released a handful of pretty amazing and successful (“Out of My System” has over 22 million streams on Spotify!) one-off singles. Youngr’s vibe is often a combination of R&B, electronic and indie music and believe me when I tell you the mix is glorious. Want a taste? Then check out Youngr’s latest single “Monsters” (April 2017).

Loving it, right?

Now you want to know a bit more about Youngr, don’t you?

You’re in luck, then!

We at Direct Lyrics recently did a FUN interview with Youngr where we discussed his new single “Monsters”, his upcoming projects, his on-going UK/Europe tour, his favorite songs of the moment or who would he want to collaborate with in the future, among other things. Don’t miss it!

Q&A

1. Hi Youngr! Where are you answering this Q&A from and how’s your day been like so far?

I'm on a plane to Amsterdam. There are a row of LADS in front of me. Off on a weekend stag. Hilarious. Got up at 6am... Had a beer and scrambled eggs at wonder tree... Feeling good!

2. You recently released your new single “Monsters”. What inspired the lyrics of this song and how would you describe it sonically for those who have yet to check it out?

It's like British indie, a Red Hot Chilli pepper flake for a bit of flavour, and the soundtrack to stranger things. The lyrics are about my time at school. Staring out the window counting down the seconds till I can get home to my drum kit.

3. Can we expect an EP or full-length album from Youngr coming out later this year or are you happy just releasing one-off singles for the time being?

One off singles are feeling pretty good at the moment. The album has been whispered about... But nothing for the foreseeable future.

4. We see you’re signed to Island Records/Universal. What was the process of singing to them? Must’ve been an exciting experience singing to a major label!?

Yeah it was fun! They courted me with a romantic candle lit dinner. Got me super drunk on red wine, gave me a pen at the end of the night and tricked me into signing my life away! But it's ok, the meal was super tasty.

5. What were some of your musical inspirations growing up?

Simply Red, Prince, Michael Jackson, James Brown, Incubus, Red Chili Peppers, Steven Hendry, N.E.R.D, Timbaland, Feist.

6. You’re currently doing a tour across Europe and the UK. What’s a Youngr live concert like and what’s one future date in your tour calendar you’re so looking forward to play already?

It's like a whirlwind of fun! I like to create 45 minutes of madness. I like to see people smile. I like teeth!. Can't wait for Boardmasters... 'Cause I've wanted to watch Jamiroquai all my life!! Who cares about the Youngr show... I wanna watch "Cosmic Girl"!

7. If you could record a collaboration with any artist tomorrow, who would it be, why him/her, and how do you imagine your song to be like?

Incubus. Cause they fucking rule. And it would sound like a groovy, harmonious, ballsy pop song.

8. What songs you’ve been recently playing a lot on your phone these days? A top 5?

Gorillaz - the apprentice

Mf robots - come on with the good thing

Stony browder jr. - Central Line

Son Of Kong - club tropigwana

Incubus - undefeated

9. Thank you for your time, Youngr! Any last thing you’d like to share with our readers?

Super weird habit of mine i just realised ive done it all my life... Everytime I flush the toilet on an aeroplane I have to put my fingers in my ears cause the sound freaks me out.

So... There you go. Now you know that.
